The Elena Kats-Chernin Collection,
ABC Classics 4816430 (2017) (10 CDs)
ABC Classics celebrated Elena Kats-Chernin's 60th birthday with a 10CD collection of her music, The Elena Kats-Chernin Collection, including the first recording of Displaced Dances, the piano concerto that Elena wrote for Stephanie in 2000.
The Elena Kats-Chernin Collection also contains re-releases of many of Stephanie's recordings of Elena's music including a complete re-release of the CD Clocks (1997) in which Stephanie performed solos and chamber works as a founding member of the Sydney Alpha Ensemble. Stephanie's contributions to this celebration of Elena's music are listed below.
Stephanie gave the world premier of Displaced Dances in 2000 with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra under Tuomas Ollila at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre in Brisbane. She also played the work with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra under Martyn Brabbins in the Sydney Opera House. Her recording with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra under David Stanhope is the performance that appears on this release.
Displaced Dances is a suite of 12 dances with titles that are sometimes descriptive, sometimes sardonic, sometimes elusive. Chthonic Melody refers to a word that Stephanie's husband Peter, a music critic, once used in a review, and which caught Elena's attention.
